The catch of the day...

While erdoc was out surfing today he caught a big fish...

A lot of stuff in here worth sparing a second thought now and then...

Who needs C anyway...

Neal at Quartus has been busy and it looks like a fairly major revision of Quartus Forth is imminent...

Some may find the stack notation of forth rather daunting and inefficient... For others, forth itself may be as fresh and refreshing an approach to programming as ever...

Macs and Palms...

So a mate asked erdoc about macs the other day, given he was contemplating buying one...

Thing is, he was heavily invested in palm stuff...

Did a bit of research - NOT much but enough to find out that a lot of stuff erdoc uses does not have satisfactory mac solutions - ie ns-basic, natara bonsai... lack of conduits...

As secure and nice as the mac is to use the lack of the stuff a windoze person would take for granted, particularly with regards to palm stuff - erdoc could not recommend the purchase of one on this ocassion.

this is not to say erdoc advocates windoze but ... windoze is a necessary evil... just like mmm.... drug companies... some (okay most) of which qualify in erdoc's books as being totally evil but are unfortunately a bit of a necessity since they themselves make the drugs we use and we can't do a bloody thing about it.

As a bit of a philosophical meander... what is evil? erdoc has a pretty neoplatonic take on this subjective issue.... but anyways, like all things down in the ED we just deal with it.

Merry Christmas! And Windows is NOT a RTOS!!!

<true-tolife-story>

Mmm... Let's get a FAST ultrasound here...

Err you'll have to wait... It's still booting... Looks like somebody forgot to shit it down properly the last time and it's still doing the hard disk test thingy...

Windows?

Windows...

When will people learn we don't want flipping windows in our machines? Normal u/s machines which we can turn on and off simply are plenty good enough!

Pascal for PalmOS... Does Armlets too...

This looks promising. It's free too! NS-Basic is way easier to use however, for knocking up quick apps.

Keep things simple, guys!

Recent locum shift at another local hospital, during a resuscitation...

erdoc: Okay, let's get a 12-lead now guys...
nurse: hang on, the ecg machine is booting...
erdoc: ...er what? booting?
nurse: yeah (unhappilly)
erdoc: ECG machines don't boot like computers, you just turn them on, and they run...
nurse: errr... this one does... it runs windows...
erdoc: you mean...
nurse: yep, some idiot decided it was a good idea. At the time. Personally we all hate it...

I mean, what is it with these idiots... do they EVER field test their products? We use them, not flipping MCSE dime-a-dozen 'engineers' or 'IT specialists' whatever moniker they go under these days(engineers my flipping big toe).

WHO THE HELL NEEDS FLIPPING WINDOWS ON AN ECG MACHINE????!!!!!!!

GTA:San Andreas hints and tips...

So it's been a rough shift... well, time to unwind with GTA:San Andreas...

Most important tip: When the wife says stop... STOP!!!

Seriously... :)

But anyways, here's what erdoc has found most useful so far...

1. Take your time in Los Santos. Get all the tags. Get weapons mastery in machine-pistols, H&K, AK, sawn-off shot gun. Take your time conquering all the 'hoods. It probably is best to build a solid foundation.

2. There is a uzi/mac-10 type thingy in the storm drain under the steel bridge behind CJ's house. There is also body armor in the same storm drain about a bridge away. There is a knuckle-duster and a 9 milli around the houses of the cul-de-sac where CJ lives. Spray can (for the tags) on top of the roof of the pawn shop - these appear to be replenished bd I think, od at the bare minimum. So there's no lack of weapons there.

3. To skill up on weapons, go to the pizza stack in Idlewood. There should be quite a few ballas homies there. keep walking round the pizza place - they'll come at you sooner or later. Take them out. Take their cash and guns. Repeat. Low on health? Eat some pizza. Cops coming at you for your wanted level? There's the pay and spray across the way, just jack a passing car and drive thru' and fix your wanted level.

4. Need some dough? Well if the ballas hoodlums aren't giving you enough cash - go burglarize a few houses. There's a burglar van in what's best described as 'council housing commission' flats nearby, just near the gym and binco clothes shop.

5. Apart from that? Well two machine pistols at hitman level can lay down a pretty impressive hail of lead. Even the H&K at hitman level can't boast that level of firepower although it certainly outranges the twin pistols.

Have fun and drop in your hints here :)

Why patients prefer coming to ED's rather than their GP's...

1. You guys are open 24/7

2. I trust you guys more (huh?)

3. You actually examine me (double huh?)

4. You spend more time with me than my GP (treble huh?)

5. My GP won't treat x (x being mmm... ingrown toenails, small abscesses, paronychias what have you... instead of huh? this is an ARRGH!)

6. You guys are generous, you give us take home meds (well chemists are hardly going to be open at 3 am are they? Mmm... better review this policy)

7. It's free (okay this may not apply in the US but for more progressive countries - and yes, this is a dig at you yanks <wink> this is true)

sigh.... there's probably more...

Feel free to add in your own reasons, lads...

Natara Bonsai...

Natara Bonsai is probably the best outliner for the palm OS platform at present, its only possible other competitor being Shadowplan whic erdoc found useful as well many years ago but has not looked at in recent years.

It is indeed a pity that MindJet stopped support for its palm OS mind manager mind mapping software, because erdoc found the windoze version pretty darn good.
